What are Tapioca Pearls?šŸ“œ

Tapioca Pearl

A tapioca pearl, also known as bubble or boba, is made of tapioca powder ā€“ a type of starch found in cassava roots. šŸŒ± Tapioca starch gives a great chewy texture when mixed with water. Additionally, it should be mentioned that it is gluten-free. By adding different ingredients, like water, sugar, or some other type of sweetener like honey, tapioca pearls can vary in color and texture. šŸŽØāœØ They are now a globally popular key ingredient in many Asian bubble tea variations and can also be found in smaller sizes in foods and drinks, such as tapioca pudding. šŸ®

  • History of tapioca pearls

Making jelly-like desserts from starch and using them in dessert dishes and drinks originated from Island Southeast Asia. Traditional versions of tapioca pearls made from native starch sources like palm hearts or glutinous rice include pearl sago, landang, and kaong. They are used in a wide variety of dishes and drinks like bilo-bilo.

The introduction of cassava from South America during the colonial era added another starch source to Southeast Asian cuisine, resulting in cassava-based versions of Southeast Asian dishes that were formerly made from native starch sources. Among these are tapioca pearls, which originated as a cheaper alternative to pearl sago. They are virtually indistinguishable in taste and can be used interchangeably.

  • Manufacturing

It is actually possible to prepare your own tapioca pearls. This is a great option if you want to try to make your own bubble tea, and if you are thinking about enriching your beverages bought at a local boba store. šŸµ The main advantage of making your own bubble tea bubbles is that you can adjust their chewiness and firmness to what you like.

Tapioca pearls are created using only a handful of simple ingredients: tapioca starch (tapioca flour) from the cassava root, brown sugar, and hot water. To create pearls, tapioca flour is mixed with boiling water until a kneadable consistency is achieved. The dough is cut and rolled into a spherical shape.
